Real ID Requirements & U.S. Domestic Travel

As we approach 2025, travelers in the U.S. should be aware of significant changes regarding Real ID requirements for domestic air travel.

What is Real ID? The Real ID Act, enacted by the federal government in 2005, aims to enhance airport security by enforcing specific standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. These standards ensure that IDs are more secure and more difficult to forge. One key feature of Real ID-compliant cards is a star located in the upper-right corner. Additionally, these IDs are linked to a national database to facilitate identity verification.

Starting on May 7, 2025, travelers intending to fly domestically will be required to present a Real ID-compliant driver's license or state ID to board their flights. For those without a Real ID-compliant card, alternative forms of identification, such as a valid passport or military ID, will be necessary. It's important to note that regular driver's licenses will no longer be accepted at airport security checkpoints. Beyond air travel, possessing a Real ID will also be mandatory for accessing certain federal buildings, nuclear power plants, and other secure facilities.

Being prepared can help ensure your travel experience is smooth and hassle-free. Stay informed and make the necessary adjustments to comply with the upcoming changes!
