Is Travel Insurance Worth the Investment for International Trips?

Deciding whether to purchase travel insurance for an international trip can be a tricky decision. Generally, travel insurance is a worthwhile investment if you have concerns about losing money due to trip cancellations or delays, or if you're worried about potentially high medical costs while abroad. Before buying a policy, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What are the chances your trip could be impacted by severe weather or other unforeseen events?

  • What are the chances you got sick while abroad?

  • How much financial risk are you willing to take on?

  • How much are you willing to pay for the peace of mind a travel insurance policy provides?

  • Do you or a loved one have any health issues that could complicate your trip?

If you can't afford to cancel and rebook your trip, or if your regular health insurance doesn't cover you overseas, then travel insurance is likely a smart investment. However, for short domestic trips, it's typically not necessary to purchase a separate travel insurance policy.
